The Bridgeport Regional Business Council 's Healthcare Council launched its Wellness Initiative in 2009 to provide added value to BRBC members. Healthcare has become one of the most serious issues facing American businesses today, due primarily to the costs incurred by both small and large companies that offer health care benefits to their employees. Wellness programs that include consistent exercise like walking have reduced health care costs and
employee absenteeism at businesses across the country. Company fitness challenges are also a great way to encourage teambuilding and boost employee morale.
The BRBC Fitness Challenge marked the first phase of the Wellness Initiative. 30 BRBC member organizations committed to participate in a 90 day fitness challenge from September 1, 2009 to November 29, 2009 that encouraged employees to walk at least 10,000 steps each day.
At the beginning of the fitness challenge, each participating employee received a pedometer donated by United Healthcare to count the number of steps the employee takes each day. Team captains tracked their team’s progress with weekly reports. At the end of the challenge, companies reported their successes. The winning companies were presented with the BRBC’s
first annual Healthy Business Award at the Annual Dinner on December 9, 2009: The Caron Collection, Ltd. (Small Business, 1-50 employees), R. C. Bigelow, Inc. (Mid-Sized Business, 51-500 employees), and St. Vincent's Medical Center (Large Business, over 500 employees).
